Queens County released inmates are processed through the New York City Department of Correction, not a county sheriff's office. Queens is one of the five boroughs of New York City, which means the city runs all jail operations. Inmates from Queens are held at Rikers Island or other DOC facilities. To look up someone who was released from city custody, the NYC DOC Inmate Lookup is the main tool. You can also use VINELink, the DOCCS system for state prison records, and the statewide court records search. Queens Central Booking at 125-01 Queens Blvd in Kew Gardens handles initial processing for arrests made in the borough.

NYC Released Inmates and Queens

The New York City Department of Correction handles all inmates from Queens County. There is no county-level jail in Queens. Instead, people arrested in the borough go through Queens Central Booking at 125-01 Queens Blvd in Kew Gardens. From there, they may be transferred to Rikers Island or one of the other DOC facilities across the city. The DOC runs several jails, and inmates get placed based on classification, security level, and available space.

Queens is the most diverse county in the United States by some measures. It has over 2.3 million residents. The volume of arrests and releases is high. The DOC processes thousands of bookings and releases every year across all five boroughs. The main DOC phone line is (718) 546-1500. Staff can answer general questions, but for specific inmate information, the online lookup tool works better.

Because Queens is part of New York City, the system works differently than in upstate counties. There is no separate sheriff's jail. The DOC is the sole authority for city inmates. This applies to all five boroughs: Manhattan (New York County), Brooklyn (Kings County), the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island (Richmond County).

Released Inmates Visiting in Queens

Inmates from Queens are held at various DOC facilities. Rikers Island is the largest complex. To visit, you need to know which facility the person is in. The DOC Inmate Lookup will tell you. Visiting hours vary by facility. You must have a valid photo ID and follow the dress code. Visitors under 16 need to be with an adult.

The DOC also offers video visits at some facilities. This can save a trip, especially since getting to Rikers Island takes time. Check the DOC website for current video visit options and scheduling. If you show up and the person is no longer in custody, staff will tell you they have been released.

When an inmate is released from DOC custody, they leave from whatever facility they are housed in. Property gets returned at that time. If someone was sentenced to state prison, they transfer to a DOCCS reception center and the state takes over. The DOC still has the booking and city custody records on file.

FOIL Requests for Queens Released Inmates

New York's Freedom of Information Law applies to the NYC Department of Correction just like any other government agency. Under Public Officers Law Article 6, you can request records about inmates held in DOC facilities. This includes booking information, release dates, and facility assignments. Medical records are generally exempt.

Send FOIL requests to the DOC Records Access Officer. Include the person's full name, approximate dates of custody, and what you need. The agency has five business days to respond. Page copies are $0.25 each. The DOC handles a high volume of requests, so be patient. If denied, you can appeal.

Keep in mind: Correction Law Section 9 lets DOCCS remove online records for certain non-violent offenders five years after they finish their sentence. This applies to state records, not city DOC records. But if someone went from city custody to state prison and back, their state records may no longer be online even though they once were.

The Sex Offender Registry lists Level 2 and Level 3 offenders from all counties, including Queens. Call 1-800-262-3257 for Level 1. Historical records are at the New York State Archives.
